Search

Search Style

Searching using the 'specific' setting will return results with the entered name only. Leaving the forename field blank will return all entries with the entered surname and vice versa. Using 'extended' will widen the search to include similar names within the main entry's name.

In the Burials section there is an additional setting of 'open', as there is more information available within the burials database. Using 'open' will widen the search still further picking out names that also reside in parent and godparent fields.

Example: The forename combination of 'Mary' and 'Dunn' will result in a few returns using the specific filter, a few thousand returns with the extended filter (many Marys and many Dunns will be found) and, in the Baptisms case, still more returns will be produced with the open filter as the search widens to include Godparents.

In general, to widen searches, leave a field blank. To narrow searches include as much information as possible. The use of the wild card * is also possible.

Example: 'Mary' and 'Dunn' using the specific filter will result in only the entries 'Mary Dunn' being found whereas 'Mar*' and 'Dun*' will return entries such as Margt. Dunny, Mary Ann Dunn or Mary A. Dunbar.

Dates

Date ranges can be selected from the drop-down menus within the limits of the database entries. Leaving them as they are will search the entire date range. Selecting just one date of the 2 results in a date cap. If only the year is selected, January 1st is implied for the start date and 31 December for the end date.

For example: if 1834 is selected in both start and end fields, the results return will be for that year (1834) only.

Statistics

General Guides

The statistics section provides rudementary counts of information in the database. Please note it is only as good as the original data records.

It is best to use wild cards (*) in the fields provided, as various spellings may exist for street names or cause of death. Once a search as been performed with street and/or cause of death values entered, a list of possible values will appear on the right. Use these indicators to modify your search characteristics.

Please note, cause of death has been included for interest only as this information was recorded sporodically. It should not be used for absolute statistical purposes.
